Five More Minneapolis Librarians
File Discrimination Charges
Five more librarians working at Minneapolis Public Library’s Central Library have filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, charging that a number of porn-surfing patrons who have been monopolizing Internet terminals have made the working atmosphere at the library hostile and offensive.
The staffers’ May 22 complaint brings to 12 the number of employees seeking redress, and comes less than two weeks after officials implemented a new Internet policy requiring patrons to show proper identification and barring minors from cyberimages deemed harmful to them.
A day after the latest complaint was filed, officials held the first of what was promised to be a series of public hearings on the new policy. According to the May 24 Minneapolis Star Tribune, librarians’ union head Helen Burke told Director Mary Lawson at the meeting that the new rules have already improved working conditions.
