Columbine High Reaches Library Goal

The $3.1 million needed to build a new library at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, was raised May 2 during a two-day radio phone-athon, after two of Denver’s richest residents donated $350,000 two minutes before the show ended.

Bob Sturm, son of billionaire Donald Sturm, pitched in $250,000 and Sharon Magness, widow of cable magnate Bob Magness, gave $100,000, according to the May 3 Denver Post. Both had kicked off the fundraising drive earlier in the year with $250,000 donations each.

Families of the victims organized the fundraising group HOPE, Healing of People Everywhere. The money had to be raised by June 30 before construction could begin.

The library, which is now sealed off and hidden behind a temporary wall lined with lockers, was the site of most of the killings in April 1999. It will be replaced with a two-story glass atrium; the new library will be built on the west side of the building.
