Attempted Rape Reported
at Bridgeport Library

Police are investigating the attempted rape of an 8-year-old girl May 3 at the main branch of the Bridgeport (Conn.) Public Library. Allegedly the man walked the girl to the basement of the library about 4 p.m. where he attempted to sexually assault her. The girl got away from him and went to a librarian who then called police.

“We feel terrible this happened. Everyone should feel safe in the library,” said Ann Osbon, assistant city librarian, in the May 5 Bridgeport Connecticut Post. “Parents may tell kids to go to the library after school thinking it is safe, but society has changed.”

Osbon said staff is examining how effective the current library policy is, which states that children need to be supervised by a parent or guardian while they are in the library. Osbon said the girl will receive counseling.
