Susan Roman Appointed Director
of ALA’s New Development Office

ALA Executive Director William Gordon announced May 25 that Susan Roman, executive director of ALA’s Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA), has been selected to coordinate Association fundraising activities and create and maintain donor relationships in ALA’s newly created Development Office.

“Susan Roman brings to the position a unique combination of library experience, ALA acumen, and fundraising skills,” said Gordon. “We look forward to the success of the Development Office under her leadership.”

The Development Office was formed when the Fund for America’s Libraries was dissolved in November 1999; consultant Sandra Danforth has been overseeing the transition.

Roman joined ALA in 1986 as head of ALSC. Prior to that she directed the Reference Services Department at the American Medical Association; she has also headed youth services at the Northbrook (Ill.) Public Library, and served as an adult reference librarian at the Deerfield (Ill.) Public Library. Roman will start her new position June 19, but will fulfill major commitments to ALSC and ALTA through the end of ALA Annual Conference, which will be held July 6–12.
