The consolidated appeals of a CARL lawsuit against the Hawaii State Public Library System and Ameritech Library Service have been denied by the Hawaii Supreme Court, State Librarian Virginia Lowell announced April 27.
Lowell said the decision represents the last of three lawsuits she inherited when she was appointed in August 1998. In September 1998 she canceled a controversial contract with Ameritech Library Services, suppliers of the library’s Dynix computer system. Former state librarian Bart Kane had awarded the contract to Ameritech in July 1996, setting off the lawsuit from competing vendor CARL.
“We are pleased that these legal issues are settled,” Lowell said. “We truly have turned a corner, and can now focus completely on becoming a 21st-century library system and being a partner with Hawaii state government and other governmental and nonprofit agencies in revitalizing Hawaii’s economy.”
