Berry Elected ALA President for
2001–2002, Bishoff Treasurer

John W. Berry, executive director of NILRC: A Consortium of Community Colleges, Colleges, and Universities in River Forest, Illinois, has been elected ALA president for the 2001–2002 term. Berry, who won 52% of the votes cast, will succeed Nancy Kranich as president in July 2001, at the close of ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco. He defeated Claudia Sumler, director of the Camden County (N.J.) Library, who garnered 48% of the votes cast for president.

“I am deeply honored to be elected ALA president,” Berry said. “There has never been a more challenging or exciting time to be a library professional. Our greatest single challenge is the recruitment of a diverse workforce that both reflects and enhances the Association’s membership and the communities we serve.”

Lizbeth Bishoff of the Bishoff Group, a library management consulting firm in Evergreen, Colorado, was elected ALA treasurer for a four-year term beginning in July 2000. She won 55% of the votes for treasurer, defeating Peter Young, chief of Cataloging Distribution at the Library of Congress.

Official election results, including those for ALA councilors and officers of divisions and round tables, are posted on the ALA Web site.
