Clinton Names Martha Gould
Chair of NCLIS
The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science announced March 3 that President Clinton has named Martha B. Gould to chair the commission. Gould, who was appointed to NCLIS in 1993 and reappointed to a five-year term in 1998, served as vice chair under Jeanne Hurley Simon, who died February 20.
“Jeanne was a dear friend and a wonderful colleague,” said Gould upon her appointment. “I will work very hard to continue the work she began. Her dedication to the promotion of literacy and to libraries will continue to serve as a model for all of us.”
Gould’s first act as chair was to designate Joan R. Challinor of Washington, D.C., who is in her second term on NCLIS, as vice chair.
Gould is the retired director of the Washoe County (Nev.) Library. Previously she worked at the New York Public Library, the Nevada State Library, and Los Angeles Public Library. She has been president of the Nevada Library Association and has served on the ALA Council.
