Hillary Clinton Blasts Giuliani on Libraries,
Supports Filtering for Children

Hillary Rodham Clinton blasted Senate rival Rudolph Giuliani’s record on library spending and gave her support to Internet filtering for children in a speech to the New York Library Association at its Library Lobby Day meeting in Albany March 14.

“Personally, if I were in a library I would employ filters because I think that there is a lot of stuff on the Web that is just not appropriate for children, or for adults for that matter,” said Clinton. “But you wouldn’t want to do anything other than filter for children.”

The Associated Press reported March 15 that Clinton told librarians she favored local communities and local libraries deciding on an individual basis whether to use filters.

Clinton also said there are too many politicians who reject their responsibilities to public libraries. “This year, once again, the mayor of New York has proposed cutting the library budget by a whopping 19%. Imagine if someone in the Senate from New York . . . stood for a 19% cut to our libraries,” she reflected.
