The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has chosen four libraries to receive the first National Award for Library Service. The award was established last year to provide national recognition for libraries that dedicate themselves to community service.
The winning libraries are: The Simon Wiesenthal Center Library and Archives, Los Angeles, California; Urie Elementary School Library, Lyman, Wyoming; B. B. Comer Memorial Library, Sylacauga, Alabama; and Queens Borough Public Library, Jamaica, New York.
IMLS Acting Director Beverly Sheppard said the award “recognizes these four libraries for their work with schools and religious institutions, youth organizations and nursing homes, employment bureaus, businesses, and human rights organizations.” The winners will be honored April 10 during National Library Week at a ceremony to be held at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
