Survey: 1 in 5 Youths Solicited
for Sex on Internet
One in five youths have been solicited for sex while using the Internet or have received other unwanted risqué solicitations and one in four children stumble upon porn while researching homework topics, according to a congressional study released June 8.
“Online Victimization: A Report on the Nation’s Youth” also showed that only 3% of the incidents happened in libraries; most of the porn and solicitation encounters took place on home computers. The study was done by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which surveyed 1,500 children age 10–17.
“If you’re a parent and your child is using the Internet, it is very likely that your child has been solicited for activity of a sexual manner. That’s a startling piece of information for parents,” Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), chairman of a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that funded the study, told the June 9 San Francisco Chronicle.
