San Francisco Seeks to Rehab
Its Branch Libraries

A proposal for a $129-million bond measure in November to overhaul San Francisco’s ailing branch libraries was presented to the city’s board of supervisors June 5. Championed by the Friends and Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library, the measure calls for rehabilitating 19 of the 26 branches, rebuilding four others, and adding a branch in the still-planned Mission Bay area, the June 6 San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Acting City Librarian Susan Hildreth told reporters, “The bond measure really would bring the library system into the 21st century.”

The funds would be also used to build a $14.8-million system-wide technical support center to free up space in the cramped main library, and put $5 million toward renovating an underground storage area to house library-maintained city archives.

The bond issue must be approved by city supervisors by July 28 to get a place on the November 7 ballot.
