SLA Director David Bender
Announces Retirement

Special Libraries Association Executive Director David R. Bender announced his forthcoming retirement to the SLA Board of Directors at the close of the organization’s annual conference June 15. Bender, who has led the second-largest library association in North America since 1979, said that his was “the best job in the world.” Citing his sense that “these may be the best of times” for SLA, Bender remarked that “the time for significant changes in leadership . . . is during good times.”

SLA President Donna Scheeder commented that Bender’s track record was “enviable,” with accomplishments that included “the growth of SLA as a global organization, the move of its headquarters, and the development of the Virtual Association that has benefited us all.”

Bender’s retirement will officially begin July 31, 2001, but the association will begin the search for a successor immediately.
