Library Sues Ex-Director
over Missing Funds

The board of the Homer Township Public Library District in Lockport, Illinois, has filed suit against the library’s former director, Regetta Meyers, seeking more than $320,000 in allegedly stolen funds and $1 million in punitive damages. Meyers is scheduled to appear in court August 15 for a pretrial hearing on criminal theft and misconduct charges brought against her in December 1999.

Founding director of the 17-year-old library, Meyers resigned last September after an audit revealed that $157,324 was missing from petty cash between July 1996 and August 1999. Subsequently, officials discovered additional discrepancies from the account that occurred between 1992 and July 1996, according to Jody Studer, one of two acting library directors.

“We want to do what we can to recoup any losses we can,” library board secretary Ed O’Brien said in the June 8 Chicago Daily Southtown.
