California Libraries Form
Information Network

The University of California’s California Digital Library (CDL) and the Library of California announced plans in mid-June for sharing information between the two systems. The project, which may take as long as five years to implement, will link public, academic, law, and special libraries throughout the state.

According to the June 20 UC/Berkeley Daily Californian, library users in rural areas will benefit the most, since they will have a wider choice of larger libraries to borrow from. The CDL, established in 1997, serves campuses in the University of California system; the Library of California was established by the California legislature in 1998 to share library resources among many different collections.

Regional cooperatives will lay the groundwork for establishing the new network over the next few years.
