
After resolving design problems that have held up the project since last October, the Broward County (Fla.) Commission approved a $10.9-million construction contract for the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center June 13.
Although it was feared that the structural design problems with the roof and building supports would send the facility as much as $2.5 million over budget, the added costs were absorbed by scaling down other aspects of the project. “We were able to get back within the budget and get the library back on track,” Commissioner John Rodstrom told the June 14 Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. The newspaper said the library is expected to be finished within two years; it was originally scheduled to open in late 1999.
