Library in Ghana
Gets Books from Michigan

Akuapem South District, Ghana, will establish its first library this fall with more than 12,000 hardcover and paperback volumes sent along by a civic group in Lansing, Michigan.

Donors dropped off new and used books, ranging from children’s literature to nonfiction, at the Clarence H. Rosa Public Library and other sites; the library and the local school district each contributed hundreds of books, Barbara Roberts Mason, chair of the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission, told American Libraries. However, most of the books—thousands more than expected—came from individual donors.

“I wrote an editorial in the Lansing State Journal, and the people came out en masse,” Mason said. The books were packed into a 40-foot cargo container—along with six library tables (courtesy of the school district), assorted chairs, and 14 bicycles—and began their voyage July 11.

Mason and Lansing Mayor David Hollister will lead a delegation to the West African nation in September and will help set up a library in Abueri and possibly also in Nsawam, government seat of Akuapem South District, Mason said.
