Hayward PL Deems Filters UnnecessaryHayward (Calif.) Public Library commissioners announced in early July they would not install filters on the library’s public Internet terminals, citing a long-standing commitment to fighting censorship and a lack of problems with the library’s unrestricted-access policy thus far, according to the July 7 Hayward Daily Review. Commissioner Nathaniel Bruno had initially voiced concern that unfiltered terminals could endanger children visiting the library. But Library Director Marilyn Baker-Madsen said that patrons had accidentally visited “inappropriate sites” only twice in the four years since public Internet access became available, and that there had been no problems with patrons seeking pornography.
