Former WVU Library Accountant
Convicted of Embezzlement
A former business office accountant for the West Virginia University Library System faces a possible prison sentence of three to 30 years after being convicted July 13 on felony charges of falsifying accounts, embezzlement, and fraudulent scheme.
Susan Brown, who now works as a substitute teacher, was found guilty of stealing more than $28,000 from April 1994 to May 1996 by repeatedly depositing less in fines and special-service revenue than she had received, the Morgantown Dominion Post reported July 14.
Brown had argued that WVU used her as a scapegoat for losses that were caused by what her attorney called sloppy accounting and lax security. She said her only questionable activity was writing personal checks for cash from the library vault and then not repaying the cash for months at a time.
Judge Robert B. Stone ordered a presentence investigation report and victim impact statement to determine how much Brown should pay WVU in restitution; meanwhile, Brown is free on bond.
