Fire Closes Clearwater Branch LibraryA fire set by an arsonist who broke into the North Greenwood branch of the Clearwater (Fla.) Public Library System at 3 a.m. July 16 has left library officials pondering whether they should make repairs or move to a temporary location until a planned new and larger branch is built. The summer reading and storytime programs have already been moved into a neighborhood recreation center. System Director John Szabo told American Libraries that damages may cost up to $100,000. He said the fire destroyed 75% of the light fixtures, damaged duct work, melted or warped anything plastic, and covered everything with a layer of soot. Also destroyed in the fire was a 1940s-era suitcase. When fire fighters saw it, they called the bomb squad; after x-rays revealed wires inside, it was detonated. Szabo said the wires were part of the construction of the suitcase, which was a prop for the summer reading program theme, “Passport to the World.” Posted July 24, 2000. |
