EdLiNC Survey: E-rate Program a SuccessThe U.S. government’s $2.25-billion e-rate program for connecting schools and libraries to the Internet has been successful in integrating new technologies into American education, according to a survey conducted by the Education and Library Networks Coalition. The report, published on EdLiNC’s Web site, also found that the program has encouraged parents to become more involved in their children’s learning. “The report released today by EdLiNC is another confirmation that the e-rate program is a very powerful tool in leveling the playing field for everyone in our country, regardless of economic or geographic background,” FCC Chairman William Kennard announced July 12. The survey, sent to each of the 15,500 schools, libraries, and consortia that filed applications in the second year of the e-rate program, also concluded that local public libraries are filling in the gaps for schools without libraries; and that e-rate discounts are “dramatically expanding the ability of schools and libraries to meet and even exceed their technology goals.” Posted July 17, 2000. |
