West Virginia Library Reopens After FireCabell County (W. Va.) Public Library’s main facility in Huntington reopened January 5, two days after a fire in the third-floor Adult Learning Center destroyed a computer and filing cabinet, and water from fire hoses damaged books and carpeting on the second floor. Library Director Judy Rule told American Libraries that water and smoke destroyed more than the fire, with early damage estimates reaching $100,000. “We have a lot to be thankful for,” she said. “It could have been much worse.” Rule said the fire was apparently caused by a space heater that was left on over the holidays; but the library was staffed when the fire broke out, it was discovered quickly, and the fire department responded “right away.” “We set the books on end and fanned the pages,” Rule said. They have been freeze dried, and an expert from Marshall University has assessed the damage and “felt that we would lose very few books.” Posted January 10, 2000. |
