Las Vegas Board Keeps Playboy
Accessible to Teens
After a two-month debate, the Las Vegas–Clark County (Nev.) Library District board voted January 13 to continue to allow all library cardholders access to Playboy magazine, no matter what their age. The board voted against a staff recommendation to increase the minimum age for obtaining a library card without parental consent from 14 to 18.
Currently anyone with a library card can view the magazines, which are kept behind the reference desk. Out of the district’s 23 libraries, four carry Playboy, according to the January 14 Las Vegas Sun.
“We can’t enforce every parent’s desire when it comes to content, even though that would be nice,” trustee Mel Pohl said at the board meeting.
The debate began in November when a teacher saw three middle-school boys reading the magazine. District Executive Director Daniel Walters told the paper that no minors have requested a copy of the magazine since that incident.
