Filtering Facts Reopens with Funding
from Family-Values Groups
“I am very excited to announce the re-opening of Filtering Facts on January 31, 2000,” pro-filtering activist David Burt wrote in the January 21 issue of the electronic Filtering Facts Weekly Newsletter. Noting his regret over “retiring just as we were entering a crucial phase of our struggle with the American Library Association to protect our children,” Burt disclosed that he has dissolved Filtering Facts’ nonprofit status “thanks to the generous support of the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families and Citizens for Community Values [for whom] I will be a paid contractor.” He also said Filtering Facts will retain its original phone number and Web site.
Burt had announced November 5 that he was closing Filtering Facts because of time constraints on his other responsibilities, such as being “a 20-hours-a-week stay-at-home Dad.”
Among the newsletter’s headlines was “ALA throws away chance at compromise,” a story that slammed the Association for not modifying its policy favoring “children’s access to everything, including pornography.”
