Atrium to Replace Columbine Library SiteJefferson County (Colo.) school board officials voted four to one January 20 to replace the Columbine High School library with an atrium and build a new library elsewhere at the school. The library has been closed since the student murder rampage last April. In December, HOPE (Healing of People Everywhere), a group of parents, siblings, and friends of the killed or injured students, pledged to raise the necessary $3.1 million by June 30. “For the HOPE parents to undertake this tremendous act and provide for our present and future students is very moving,” board President Jon DeStefano said, according to the January 21 Denver Post. During the public-forum portion of the meeting, several individuals said that HOPE had excluded many students and staff in the decision, and the lone dissenting vote reflected this concern. However, Jefferson County schools’ Interim Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Barbara Monseu told reporters that the new library should be called a media center, because to many students the term “library” is synonymous with the tragedy.
