Akron Trustees Vote to Expand
Main Library
The Akron-Summit County (Ohio) Public Library board voted January 20 to pursue its original plan to expand and renovate its 30-year-old downtown main library at a cost of $50 million, rather than move to a new facility.
During the past two years, the trustees had considered moving the library to two sites proposed by Mayor Don Plusquellic as part of his goal of creating a downtown cultural district. Earlier this month, however, Plusquellic apologized for holding up the library’s efforts and urged the board to go ahead with its original remodeling plan.
The expansion would increase the library’s space from its current 140,000 square feet to at least 200,000 square feet and would include a 350-space parking deck. The newspaper said the project probably won’t be completed until the end of 2004. The library is considering launching a fundraising campaign to help pay for the expansion.
