A Colorado bill stemming from the Columbine High School murder rampage in April 1999 was postponed indefinitely January 11 by the House Judiciary Committee. HR 1118, submitted by Representative Don Lee (R-Littleton), would have required public libraries, “upon request of the parent or guardian of a child under 18 years of age, to disclose such child’s library records to the parent or legal guardian.” The bill would have also applied to materials requested by minors, in addition to circulation records.
The January 12 Denver Rocky Mountain News reported that opponents feared a significant fiscal impact on public and school libraries in the state. A Columbine task force had asked Lee to submit the bill after members discussed whether the parents of gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold knew what their sons were planning.
