National Research Council to Study
Ways to Protect Kids from Internet Porn

At the request of Congress, the National Research Council will conduct a study to examine tools and strategies for protecting kids from pornography on the Internet. Noting that “The subject of controlling children’s Internet access to pornography is charged politically and emotionally in the national debate,” the announcement of the project said that the final report “will avoid making specific policy recommendations that embed particular social values in this area.”

The request for the study was part of the Protection of Children from Sexual Predators Act of 1998, which called for the NRC to conduct a study of ways to approach the problem of online availability of pornographic material to children, “in order to develop possible amendments to Federal criminal law and other law enforcement techniques to respond to the problem.”

The NRC is a nonprofit organization that provides independent advice to the government on matters of public policy involving science, technology, and medicine. The council is seeking nominations for experts, including librarians, to serve on the committee that will examine the issue.
