Napster Backer Hacks
Bibliothèque Nationale Web Site
The Web site of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France was taken over August 16 by a supporter of Napster, the company whose software enables Internet users to share music files that has been under fire in the U.S. courts, ZDNet Australia reported August 17. The site was restored within a day.
The hacker, who adopted the name “pimpshiz,” posted a message in English under a headline that read, “The save Napster hack attack! Episode 3.” Other “episodes” in the campaign targeted television shows and other Web sites, pimpshiz explained in an e-mail to ZDNet Australia, and “Episode 4 is coming soon.”
The defaced site included comments addressed to the band Metallica, which has sued Napster for violation of copyright laws. There was also a message for the Bibliothèque Nationale’s Web site administrator that claimed the site had not been permanently damaged in the attack and explaining how to make the site less vulnerable to such attacks.
