Kunitz Named U.S. Poet LaureateStanley Kunitz will become the 10th poet laureate of the United States this fall, the Library of Congress announced July 31. He succeeds Robert Pinsky, who has held the post for the past three years. A graduate of Harvard University, the 95-year-old poet began as a reporter and feature writer for the Worcester Telegram in Massachusetts. Since 1930, Kunitz has published 10 books, and in 1958 received the Pulitzer Prize. He has taught at Columbia, Rutgers, Princeton, and other universities. As poet laureate, he will have an office in the Library of Congress and receive a salary of $35,000. Posted August 7, 2000. |
