DNA Clears Accused in Newark PL Rapes

Prosecutors dropped charges August 3 against two men arrested in connection with two rapes at the Newark (N.J.) Public Library in 1998 after DNA testing implicated a third unknown man for both crimes.

Edwin Diaz, 25, of Parsippany and Jason Yantin, 20, of Newark had been identified by the victims from photographs. Their arrests two years ago prompted Mayor Sharpe James to criticize the building’s security and library officials to increase the number of security guards and add security cameras.

Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said that the DNA from the crime scenes would be compared with samples found in a statewide database of DNA taken from sex offenders that will go online in later in the month, the New York Times reported August 4.
