Savannah Library Board
Restores Power to Its Chair

One week after reducing the power of Chair Mary Ellen Sprague, the Chatham-Effingham-Liberty Regional Library board rescinded its order for Library Director Lon Dickerson to report to Vice Chair Oscar White instead of Sprague. The April 18 action followed a request by the Chatham County commission for the trustees to reverse their decision, which was at odds with a board bylaw specifying that the vice chair’s duties are set by the president of the commission.

Sprague herself declared the order null and void at the board’s closed-door meeting, saying little about the matter afterward other than “I’m out of comments and I’m out of feelings,” the April 19 Savannah Morning News reported.

The commission has also urged the trustees not to consider changing any existing contracts with library employees until three new board members are appointed in July.
