Kansas Library Receives $1.2 Million GiftOfficials at the Topeka and Shawnee County (Kans.) Public Library announced on April 11 the receipt of a $1.2-million bequest from the estates of Robert M. and Hazel Lingo, marking the largest monetary gift in the library’s 130-year history. At a press conference to make the announcement, library Executive Director David Leamon said the Lingos have been actively involved with the library since the days when it was located on the grounds of the statehouse. “Bob went there to read, study, and use the many resources it offered. He had a reverence for that library,” Leamon said. The couple also donated funds for a story room and a bookmobile, and volunteered many hours of their time, according to the April 12 Topeka Capital-Journal. The announcement was timed to be part of National Library Week and to start the public phase of the Library Foundation’s Great Expectations Campaign. The goal of the campaign is $3.5 million to help finance the expansion and renovation of the library. Posted April 17, 2000. |
