Between the Lions Premiere
Carnegie Corporation of New York President Vartan Gregorian hosted the April 3 premiere of Between the Lions, a new television series on PBS aimed at helping children ages 4 to 7 learn to read. The event, held in Manhattan’s Florence Gould Hall Theatre on International Children’s Book Day, drew representatives from the fields of publishing, education, philanthropy, and journalism, as well as hundreds of children.
Gregorian, with the help of puppets Theo and Cleo—two members of the family of lions that live in the library in which the series is set—awarded three $25,000 grants to fund children’s book and video collections and support reading programs at the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Borough Public Library.
“Of course television alone cannot solve reading deficiencies,” said Gregorian, who was president of the New York Public Library from 1981 to 1989. “We know it takes parents, adults, and learning environments that all emphasize books and that is why, as we launch this new television program, we want to underscore the importance of children’s librarians in the educational lives of young children.”
