Stolen Explosives Found at Florida LibraryAn employee of the West Hernando (Fla.) Library discovered three explosive booster canisters next to the book-return bins around 8:30 a.m. August 26, causing the library to be evacuated and the bomb squad called. The explosives were placed in the open where they could easily be seen and were not rigged to explode, a sheriff’s spokesperson told the August 27 St. Petersburg Times. “It appeared that whoever dropped them off wanted them to be found without anyone getting hurt,” she said. The explosives had been stolen from a nearby company about 10 days earlier. A $10,000 reward was posted, along with information that the canisters could explode if dropped or shot with bullets. “All the media attention might have caused somebody to decide it wasn’t worth the heat,” said an agent of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. “They may have decided, ‘Let’s just get rid of this before we get caught with it.’” Posted September 6, 1999. |
