Calif. Senator Opposes Library Bond
over Open Access

In an open letter posted August 18 on radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s online forum, California Sen. Tim Leslie (R-Tahoe City) declared that he would not support a historic $1 billion library construction bond under consideration by the legislature “until the California Library Association withdraws its opposition to reasonable limits on minors’ access to pornography on library computers.” If passed, the California Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act would place a referendum on the November 9, 2000, ballot for a $75-million bond issue for new public library facilities and the refurbishing of existing sites.

Quoting from a California Library Association statement in opposition to SB 238, a bill that would mandate filters for minors surfing in public libraries, Leslie wrote, “Why is it . . . that the California Library Association appears so zealous to make libraries . . . perhaps the only place where children are allowed unrestricted consumption of erotic materials?”

The bond issue was assigned to the Assembly’s ASM committee August 30.
