American Family Association Vows
to Defend Librarians “Threatened” by ALA
A direct-mail campaign launched earlier this month by the American Family Association charges that “Many decent hard-working, God-fearing librarians . . . fear what the ALA will do to them if they speak out” in favor of Internet filters in libraries. AFA President Donald Wildmon is asking supporters for contributions to help the organization’s Center for Law and Policy “defend any library and any librarian threatened by the ALA or its legal henchmen at the American Civil Liberties Union.”
The eight-page letter, which asserts that ALA “seems to have unlimited resources to fund its immoral agenda, especially when you factor in the monies from the porn industry,” promises every donor of at least $20 a forthcoming video that offers tips “concerned citizens can use to reclaim their local libraries from the clutches of the ALA.”
Wildmon also asks supporters to mail a supplied postcard to radio personality Dr. Laura Schlessinger “to encourage her efforts in opposing ALA policies and practices.”
