Jeanne Hurley Simon, 77, chair of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and wife of former Sen. Paul Simon, underwent surgery for five-and-a-half hours September 9 at Methodist Hospital in Houston to remove a malignant brain tumor.
“She came through the surgery very well, and there were no complications,” said Mike Lawrence, associate director of Paul Simon’s Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. Shortly after Jeanne Simon left surgery, she was placed in the intensive care unit for post-operative recovery, where she was expected to remain for two or three days, he told American Libraries..
Paul Simon accompanied his wife, who was just diagnosed September 4 after complaining of vision problems, to Houston and they were planning to remain there for at least a week after the surgery before returning home to Illinois. “Paul said he is very hopeful,” Lawrence added.
