University of Virginia Alumnus Donates
$10 Million for American Studies Institute

University of Virginia alumnus David A. Harrison III has pledged $10 million to the university library to establish an institute for American studies. The institute will provide a setting to display materials from the library’s extensive collection of rare Americana, which includes the first Bible published in the New World, the first printing of the Declaration of Independence, and original literary manuscripts by Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and William Faulkner.

The David A. Harrison III Institute will be housed with the Albert Small Special Collections Library in a new $26-million, 65,000-square-foot facility. It will feature an exhibition gallery, study areas for visiting scholars, and a seminar room for lectures, a September 24 UV press release reported.

Harrison, a 1939 graduate of the college of arts and sciences and a 1941 graduate of the law school, has also made major donations to the university for such areas as law, medicine, historical archeology, and athletics.

Groundbreaking for the new building is projected for mid-2000.
