Study Criticizes Commitment
of Savannah Library Administrators

A management study commissioned by Chatham County in Georgia has concluded that a lack of planning and commitment on the part of administrators of the Chatham-Effingham-Liberty Regional Library in Savannah is stalling the system’s need for inner-city branch improvements, more librarians, improved reference services and collections, literacy programs, and community inclusion.

Conducted by the consulting firm of DMG Maximus, the study was discussed at an October 19 library board meeting, where library officials said the blame for many of the problems cited in the report rests on an ongoing lack of funding. The October 20 Savannah Morning News said Assistant Library Director Bill Johnson responded to the report with a letter pointing out inaccuracies and taking issue with criticism of library management and planning. He wrote that the system’s poorly planned branches were the result of political pressure.

Meanwhile, the board has retained an Atlanta attorney to help get the delayed main library construction completed so its books and materials can come out of storage and into use.
