Illinois Libraries Lap Up
LSTA Laptop Largesse

Libraries in Illinois will receive a total of $285,600 in LSTA-funded grants toward the purchase of laptop computers to circulate to patrons or to use for training and demonstrations.

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced that 143 libraries will receive the “Laptops for Learning” grants, which were awarded on a first apply/first-funded basis. Recipients include public, school, academic, and hospital libraries. “Through these grants, all types of Illinois libraries will have the opportunity to enhance access to information through the purchase of laptop computers,” said White.

The laptops come with a large, 15-inch screen to encourage use by patrons with disabilities and heighten their effectiveness for library presentations.

The grants are part of $166,175,000 in LSTA funds allocated this year to the states through state library agencies for statewide services and subgrants for technological innovation and outreach services.
