Library Clerk Murdered
Leaving Job at Night

Investigators in Oakland County, Michigan, say whomever murdered Martha Gail Fulton knew her routines. The Orion Township Public Library clerk was gunned down on her way to the parking lot as she left her part-time job after the library closed at 9 p.m. October 4. Another of the six employees on duty that evening walked out a few minutes after her and found her body, along with her undisturbed purse.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in the October 6 Detroit Free Press that “from all appearances, it looks as if it was not driven by robbery, and it was not a random situation.” Investigators say the murder was captured by a surveillance camera, but the image of the assailant is indistinguishable. They are talking to the victim’s husband of 25 years, George Fulton.

Library Director Linda Sickles told the newspaper that Fulton was a hard worker who joined the staff 18 months ago and spent 16 hours a week shelving and checking out books. The library was closed October 5 and 6 so staff could meet with grief counselors.
