Valdosta State University
Launches MLIS Program
The board of regents of the University System of Georgia recently authorized Valdosta State University to begin offering a Master of Library and Information Science degree. The program is expected to be inaugurated in the fall semester of 2000, and university officials say they will seek accreditation from the American Library Association.
The MLIS program will be housed in a new $14.2-million addition to the university library that will double the size of the current library. New offices and classrooms will be located near a new distance-education classroom, a new uplink studio, and expanded media technology spaces.
Meanwhile, VSU has begun recruiting for a program director with an earned doctorate to “continue program planning for an innovative curriculum that will be primarily Web-based and comprised of courses developed at VSU and nationally accredited library and information science programs,” according to University Librarian George R. Gaumond. The appointment is expected to be made by February 1.
