Rockets Fired at American Center
in Pakistan
The American Embassy and the American Center library and cultural office in Islamabad, Pakistan, were the targets of a multiple-rocket attack that injured at least one person November 12. A seven-story office tower housing United Nations agencies was also targeted.
The Associated Press reported November 13 that bombers placed six double-barreled rockets in parked vehicles, fled, then discharged them nearly simultaneously at 11:20 a.m., using a timer or some other remote mechanism. A Pakistani guard was injured, but the rockets fell short of their targets, and the American Center suffered only broken glass.
One report quoted U.S. intelligence officials in Washington, who said the attack “could have been Taliban-inspired, or it could be some fundamentalists responding to statements made by the Taliban or others.” Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf, Pakistan’s military ruler, announced that an investigation has been launched.
