President Renominates Two NCLIS
Commissioners; 47 Sister Libraries Named
President Clinton has nominated Bobby L. Roberts and Joan R. Challinor to serve second five-year terms on the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science.
As the director of the Central Arkansas Library System in Little Rock since 1989, Roberts manages 10 libraries. From 1978–1982 and 1984–1989, he served as head of archives and special collections at the University of Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. Challinor is chair of the advisory committee of the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and a director of newspaper publisher Knight Ridder. Both nominations require Senate confirmation.
NCLIS also announced November 15 that 47 libraries in 24 states had been designated as official participants in Sister Libraries: A White House Millennium Council Project. The project pairs public and school libraries in the United States with others worldwide, focusing initially on programs for children and teenagers. A list of the designated libraries is available on the NCLIS Web site.
