Mainstream Loudoun Founders
Get Hefner Awards
Elaine Williamson and Jeri McGiverin, founders of the civic group Mainstream Loudoun, were recognized by the Playboy Foundation November 15 for their efforts in the 1997 lawsuit that successfully challenged the use of Internet filters on all Loudoun County (Va.) Public Library computers. The two were among seven recipients of this year’s Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Awards, which are given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to protect and enhance First Amendment rights.
In November 1998, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled in favor of Mainstream Loudoun and some 20 other plaintiffs, declaring that the library’s policy requiring filters on all Internet terminals at all times was unconstitutional. Library trustees decided in April not to appeal the case.
Award winners receive a $5,000 honorarium and a crystal plaque commemorating their achievements.
