St. Tammany Trustees Agree to Offer Parents Filter Option

The St. Tammany (La.) Parish Library Board voted unanimously May 18 to have Internet filters installed on some public-access machines and to require parents to choose whether their children can use the unfettered workstations. The policy change came a month after the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit on behalf of two parents against the parish governing authority for restricting minors’ access to R-rated videos in the library collection.

“I believe filtering is reflective of what the community wants,” STPL Director Jan Butler told the May 20 New Orleans Times-Picayune. Although the precise language has yet to be finalized, the new Internet acceptable-use policy will specify that children under 10 will only be allowed online when their parents are present. Parents of 10-to-17-year-olds will have to sign a consent form specifying what type of Internet access their children are permitted.

The board’s action stemmed from community concerns that youngsters could access online pornography on STPL computers.
