Storm Floods Northeastern Iowa LibrariesAt least three libraries in northeastern Iowa were flooded May 16 after a storm system deluged the area for two days, prompting Governor Tom Vilsack to declare a disaster emergency May 17. The Dunkerton Public Library was inundated with two to three feet of water when Crane Creek overflowed its banks. Director Jan Peterson told American Libraries that some 2,000 of the 10,000-book collection were lost, but computers had been removed earlier. Three days later volunteers and workers gutted the library of water-logged carpeting and wallboard. Littleport Public Library lost about a third of its 12,000-book collection and some computer equipment when the Volga River breached its dike in three places, according to Ken Davenport, a consultant with the Northeast Iowa Regional Library System. At the Volga Public Library the children’s collection was under eight feet of water in the basement and the library was still without electricity or phone service May 19, Davenport said.
