New York Library Workers
Demonstrate to Restore Funding
Dozens of New York library workers handed out flyers April 26 at the New York Public Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences Library on Fifth Avenue to protest a $37-million budget reduction for FY 2000 imposed by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The cuts turned up again in the mayor’s April 22 executive budget, despite a city council vote in March to restore the funding and add another $8 million. NYPL staffers said the mayor has ignored requests for a 15% salary increase and wants to cut back library hours.
Ray Markey, president of New York Public Library Guild, Local 1930, told reporters: “The directors of New York’s three library systems have asked that the city increase librarian salaries. . . . Now that the city has a $2.1-billion surplus, there is no excuse for not implementing [it].”
Queens Borough Public Library Director Gary Strong told American Libraries there is widespread support for the library among city council members. The council will hold hearings in May to finalize the budget, which goes into effect July 1.
