IMLS Establishes Library Service Award, Calls for Nominations

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has established a new National Award for Library Service “to celebrate outstanding American libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities.” A winning library will be selected annually from nominations.

IMLS Acting Director Beverly Sheppard said the principal criterion for selection will be the library’s record of community service. Achievements such as attracting new audiences, establishing programs that address current social or economic issues, and fostering collaborations with other institutions in the community will be the prime considerations.

The deadline for nominations is November 20. Guidelines will be available at the IMLS Web site at www.imls.gov after June 1. The award will be made by the director of IMLS in 2000, with advice from the National Commission of Libraries and Information Science. For the past five years IMLS has given a similar award to museums.
