Donor Offers Loudoun County Library
$1 Million for Holocaust Collection

A former Loudoun County, Virginia, resident has offered the county library system $1 million to purchase materials related to the Jewish holocaust.

Leesburg Today reported May 6 that Irwin Uran, who now lives in California, has made numerous monetary gifts over the past two years to local groups, including $2 million to a local congregation to build a Leesburg-area synagogue and large donations to local public-safety and social-service organizations.

Library Board Chairman John J. Czaplewski told the newspaper he was stunned and pleased by the gift, calling it “a great, wonderful addition to our county and our library system.” Under its gift policy, the board must vote on whether to accept the donation.

The Leesburg Today article also noted that Loudoun County Libraries staff were honored as “Staff of the Year” at the recent meeting of the Virginia Public Library Directors Association for their integrity during the recent controversy over Internet access restrictions.
